The Road Taken

Most writers lament the road not taken. It brings us into a loop of should-as, could-as, would-as. But I want to celebrate the road taken.

Yes, the rood taken. I have been traveling this amazing road for the last 20 years on my trips up north. 20 years ago the road was nice and curvy and over the years was widen to eliminate the curves. There are now tunnels where some of the best curves were. But what I thought about and realize last week as I went up north to do some skiing this was the first place I say lots of deer. I had grown up in Southern Ohio where we used to see Possums but no deer. And most to Possums we sat were flat as a pancake on the road.

I used to count the deer since I was so excited to see them. I know that one trip I was able to see 25 deer in hour and half drive. Last week that number had doubled. It could be the herd near the road has doubled or my efforts at counting has improved over the last 20 years. It is such a joy to see them and yet I know that they cross the road at their peril. Last year I saw a moose cross the road near out destination. Moose are having a hard time with global warming and they don’t usually do very well near deer since the deer carry some parasite that kills moose. Anyway… I digress, you too need to celebrate the road taken and celebrate the road not taken too!
