One of the first places I suggest you go to start your memoir is your old photographs. That may include your old movies too and with some families that may even be that some of the memories are on video tape. This is a great place to start but while your their you might want to start the project of up-dating all these materials. This is very important and there is not better time as now. It is so important that I did this article for my book Remembering…life story triggers and memory essays available for purchase on the page on this blog called order your copy of remembering post at the top of this page. The book contains many more ways to keep more memories safe.
Here is a an example of what is in the book that never was published in my monthly newsletters.
Transferring old technology to new can be done at home with the right equipment, technological know-how and time. This equipment is constantly changing and improving. You may want to check on line before purchasing any of this equipment. Read the blogs to see how easily the soft ware actually is and see if there are any reasons to buy one product over the other. Theses can be really helpful when buying new technology.
It is important to digitize ones precious documents and store them on a PC and right now a cd. This gives you an opportunity to keep them as they are right now and avoid them from aging more. It gives you another opportunity to have many copies disturbed among your family members. With todayâsâ printers you can easily scan all important papers and photographs this equipment continues to come down in price but there many companies that will do it for you.
If you still have a projector you can easily run your films and use a digital camera and record the old movies and videos that you have been saving. This is an inexpensive trick but many of us do not own any equipment to run them.
Currently Sony has a disc burner that will take your old movies or videos and burn them to a DVD with or without a computer. Not all of us can do it or want to do it on our own. Therefore here is a partial list of companies that offer video transfers. For more resources, check in the yellow pages under “Video Production Services.” Here is a special hint, look for companies that specialize in home videos rather than corporate clients.

What a great topic! Preserving your family video tapes and photos is one of the most valuable projects a family can undertake. I would like to recommend a company named Timeless DVD as part of your list above. I had them transfer my family’s entire video collection: a combination of over 80 VHS, 8mm, and Mini DV tapes. They did a wonderful job. I had had a few tapes transferred by a cheaper drugstore service a few years ago, and Timeless DVD’s quality blew them out of the water. I think their services might be ideal for viewers of your blog. Their website is Timeless DVD – Video to DVD Transfer.
I have lots of memories located on VCR tapes which i would love to transfer to DVD, how tough will it be?
